【Product details】

This remarkable set of two wooden masks from 19-20th Century features a fukumen (good fortune mask) and a hannya mask, each beautifully hand-carved and housed in its original wooden box.

The fukumen is traditionally displayed as a charm for inviting prosperity and happiness. The design features a smiling, serene expression, symbolizing peace and good fortune. Unlike masks used in theatrical performances, fukumen were primarily created as decorative items to bless homes and businesses with safety and success.

The hannya mask, one of the most iconic Noh masks, represents the soul of a woman consumed by jealousy and resentment. Characterized by two menacing horns and an open-mouthed, fanged expression, this mask expresses the duality of anguish and rage. Traditionally used in Noh theater, it portrays the transformation of a woman into a demon, embodying the complex emotions of sorrow and fury. The upper face of the mask displays sadness, while the lower half shows anger, symbolizing the internal struggle and tragedy of the character.

The fukumen exhibits chips on the ears, some scuffs, and surface cracks. The hannya mask shows visible lacquer chips, cracks, and areas of wear, especially on the horns and chin. Both masks have stains and notable interior cracks from age. The wooden boxes have stains. There are some adhesive marks on the surface. Please carefully review the photographs for more details. The item will be carefully packaged; however, please be aware that some surface peeling may worsen due to transport handling. Thank you for your understanding. The stand in the photo is not for sale.

Dimensions of Fukumen: approx. H 22 cm W 17 cm D 10 cm
Dimensions of Hannya: approx. H 29 cm W 27 cm D 10 cm
