About the Artist
Kayo Yamaguchi was born in 1899, the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Anonosuke Yamaguchi, a yuzen craftsman in Abura-no-Koji Nishiki, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City. After graduating from Kakuchi Joko Elementary School (now merged with Kyoto Municipal Rakuo Elementary School) in 1902, he was introduced to Nishimura Goun, a pupil of Kishi Chikudo and Takeuchi Seiho, who was known for his paintings of animals and flowers and birds. In 1916, on the recommendation of his ailing teacher Goun, he entered the Kyoto Municipal Painting School (E-Sen), and in the same year he was selected for the 10th Bunten Exhibition for the first time. He participated actively in the official exhibitions, won special prizes at the Teiten Exhibition in 1927 and 1928, and incorporated his knowledge of modern Western painting and innovative Japanese painting, which he learned at E-sen, into the tradition of the Maruyama and Shijo school of drawing, which he had inherited from his teachers Goun and Seiho, to produce flower and bird paintings suitable for the new era. He created contemporary flower and bird paintings and perfected his own unique animal paintings with modern compositions such as "Black Panther".
