This exquisite natsume tea caddy, known as Asahi Natsume, is crafted by the lacquer artist Iwakura Rikei, a master of Kaga maki-e technique renowned for his work in tea ceremony utensils. The piece is finished in bright Wajima-style vermilion lacquer with a brush-mark pattern and decorated with pine motifs in black lacquer. This style was favored by the 14th Urasenke tea master, Tantansai. The natural wooden material enhances its elegance, with careful alignment of the black designs across the top and bottom sections.

In Japanese culture, pine trees are symbols of longevity, endurance, and steadfastness. As they remain green throughout the year, pine trees represent resilience and are often associated with auspicious occasions, making them a popular motif in tea ceremony items.

Iwakura Rikei is celebrated for his lacquer artistry and skill in traditional Kaga maki-e, contributing significantly to the world of Japanese tea ceremony utensils. The original wooden box bears his signature.

The natsume is in excellent condition. Please refer to the photos for a detailed view of its state.
