Antik Postaláda - Kishu lacquerware Document Box - 1970-1980 - Fubako文箱

This is a box for documents e.g. books, letters and other writings.
It is a carefully lacquered document box made from traditional Kishu lacquerware.

It is an essential item for Buddhist ceremonies, memorial services, and monthly visits within the Jodo Shinshu sects of Nishi Hongan-ji and Higashi Hongan-ji.
The interior is elegantly finished with a sparkling nashiji lacquer.

Kishu lacquerware (Kishu Shikki) is believed to have originated in the Muromachi period (1336-1573).
The lacquerware techniques have been passed down by skilled artisans, and in 1978, it was designated as a traditional craft by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.
It is cherished for its beauty, durability, and ease of use.
