Signed in plate, lower left and lower right corners, with painter and etcher names.

Etching trimmed just inside the plate. Preserved in reasonably good condition, soiling, some staining towards upper left and right corners, unnoticeable small creases at corners. Ca. 2 cm tear on lower edge towards left corner (please see detailed photos for accurate condition - no effect on overall aesthetics). Reverse with some soiling, remains of old hinges. Wrongly attributed in old pencil inscription on reverse.

The print is not framed. Total dimensions - 27.9 x 17.7 cm.

Anne Claude Philippe de Tubières, count de Caylus, was a French archaeologist, engraver and man of letters. He devoted his life to engraving and archaeology, winning election to both the Académie de Peinture et Sculpture and the Académie des Inscriptions. His principal work is "Recueil d’antiquités égyptiennes, étrusques, grecques, romaines et gauloises", 7 vol. (1752 - 1767, “Collection of Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek, Roman and Gallic Antiquities”).
