An appealing medium-sized six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a refined painting depicting scenes from The Tale of Genji 源氏物語 (Genji Monogatari).
The artwork captures aristocrats engaging in leisurely pastimes around a grand pavilion during autumn. In two pavilions, a nobleman holds an audience with a woman dressed in traditional luxurious Heian attire, while attendants wait outside by a gosho’guruma 御所車 (an ox-drawn carriage favoured by Heian nobility). Nearby, other noblemen play traditional musical instruments along the riverside. Another nobleman arrives on a white horse, surrounded by three attendants. Shiny gold-leaf clouds gracefully envelop the scenes.
This multi-coloured painting is set against a paper background with gold leaf highlights, framed by two silk borders: a thin navy blue one, and a wider greyish blue one with a floral motif. The screen is encased in a black lacquered frame for protection.
Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period).
Dimensions:
Total width: 268 cm (2 x 46 cm, 4 x 44 cm); Height: 118.5 cm.
The byôbu is in very good condition with a few minor restorations on the front and some re-papering on the reverse. There is a tiny hole in the neck of the horse. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
