Byzantine Earthenware 'Greek Fire' Hand Grenade
Circa 9th-11th century AD
This interesting hollow earthenware vessel, acorn-shaped with a pointed bottom, is notable for its broad rounded shoulder, deeply incised vertical lines along the body, and a double collar at the base of the neck. The top is equipped with a protruding spout, designed with a small opening for filling. The form and features of this vessel suggest its use as a hand grenade, possibly used to hold explosive materials in defensive or offensive military contexts.
Functioning as a hand grenade, this artefact was designed to be filled with Greek fire or other combustible substances. When thrown, the vessel would break upon impact, dispersing the contents and igniting upon contact with the target, making it a formidable weapon in Byzantine military strategies.
