The desire to promote the exceptional quality of the winery has characterized the Ornellaia philosophy from the very beginning. Ornellaia is a cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and the authentic expression of a unique terroir developed in harmony with nature.
THE 1986 GROWING SEASON
Dry temperatures with a considerable rise in the final phase of grape ripening had a positive effect on the fruit: the grapes proved to be very healthy with good concentration. The grapes were harvested by hand in boxes with a maximum capacity of 15 kg. The harvest began on September 15 and ended on September 26.
VINIFICATION AND AGEING
Vinification took place in the Tenuta San Guido winery.
Fermentation and maceration took about 13 days in 40 hl steel tanks; this process was followed by malolactic fermentation. The 1986 vintage matured for 17 months in 225-liter French barriques (60% of which were new, the remaining 40% used) from February 1987 to June 1988, and was released to the market after twelve months of bottle ageing
