This delightful display piece features three patinated bronze okimono 置物, each expertly crafted to resemble crabs. These bronze crabs appear to be scuttling across a dai 台 (display stand), formed from a single solid, slightly curved branch with upstanding elements, and a great aged patina.
The design cleverly gives the impression that the crabs are perched on a piece of driftwood emerging from the water, creating a captivating and naturalistic scene.
Period: Japan – assembly of this configuration probably formed during the Taishô period (1912-1926). Pair of crabs and dai presumably Meiji period (1868-1912), single crab Taishô period (1912-1926).
