Overall size with the frame is 46 cm x. 38 cm x 7 cm and the painting itself measuring 30 cm x 22 cm at sight.
A beautifully composed late 19th to early 20th century oil on board painting depicting steam and sailing ships on the river Thames. The work is technically very close to the painting style Frank William Scarbrough and we think very likely to be from his studio or very close circle.
Painted to reflect arriving evening time the painting is very atmospheric and technically well painted by an accomplished hand .
Scarbrough was a London artist who painted mainly in watercolour but occasionally in oil. Later he moved to Lincoln and continued to specialise in maritime related subject matter.
The lable on the back on the panel cover suggests the painting is circa 1900
as this supplier was operating from circa 1860
in supplying frames alongside chemist supplies and the lable corresponds to this period from our research.
Condition report . The board has had restoration work to the edges and has been cleaned and re- lacquered and re- housed within its original gilt frame . The frame has also been restored and is in lovely condition and is offered as a gift . Please refer to the notes below regarding frames.
