William Shakespeare / W. Heath Robinson (ill) - Shakespeare's Comedy: Twelfth Night - 1908

"Shakespeare's Comedy of Twelfth Night, or what you will" by William Shakespeare and illustrated by W. Heath Robinson - Hodder & Stoughton, London - 1908 first thus uK edition - 25cmx18cm - condition: very good, in fresh decorated boards, minor rusting to edge, complete with 40 captioned, tissue-guarded, full color plates by W. Heath Robinson, inscription to ffep. A very good copy. Simon Heneage in the ODNB describes Heath Robinson's illustrations for this volume as "atmospheric". A contemporary review in The Graphic noted that "the new edition of Twelfth Night. has the advantage of the poetic insight and decorative skill which mark Mr. W. Heath Robinson's serious work. This year he shows a considerable advance in freedom and grace upon the book to which we refer. The coloured drawings. are instinct with the decorative spirit of the play". The Graphic, 24 October 1908, p. 492. Twelfth Night, or What You Will is a romantic comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written around 1601–1602 as a Twelfth Night entertainment for the close of the Christmas season. The play centres on the twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated in a shipwreck. Viola (disguised as Cesario) falls in love with the Duke Orsino, who in turn is in love with Countess Olivia. Upon meeting Viola, Countess Olivia falls in love with her, thinking she is a man. The play expanded on the musical interludes and riotous disorder expected of the occasion,[1] with plot elements drawn from Barnabe Rich's short story "Of Apollonius and Silla", based on a story by Matteo Bandello. The first documented public performance was on 2 February 1602, at Candlemas, the formal end of Christmastide in the year's calendar. The play was not published until its inclusion in the 1623 First Folio.
