This first volume of The Strand Magazine was to play an important role in the writing life of Arthur Conan Doyle. Volume 1 contains a short story called 'The Voice of Silence' with illustrations by W.S. Stacey. This is not a Sherlock Holmes story, but Doyle's work with the Strand Magazine would develop from this short story into many more commissions between 1891 and 1930, including several Holme's stories in later volumes.
Vol 1. January to June 1891. Edited by George Newnes. Richly illustrated with full-page plates, and many wood-cuts engravings. Published by George Newnes, London, 1891. The book is bound in leather spine, with dark red boards. The spine in six compartments with raised bands, gilt lettering pieces within black label to compartment two, and four. Attractive marbled page edges.

Condition:
Minor wear to boards’ corners, edges, and to head and foot of spine. Internally; the book is in good condition. No names or inscription. Pages are clean, with light foxing marks on some pages. Inner hinges are very good, and pages are tightly held at the gutter. Clean text and bright illustrations (Please see pictures).
