Easter Island (Spanish: Isla de Pascua; Rapa Nui: Rapa Nui, big rock) is a Polynesian island in the Pacific Ocean. Politically, it is a province of Chile within the Valparaíso region and a Chilean national park. The Chilean governor of the island is Tarita Alarcón Rapu. The capital of Easter Island is Hanga Roa. The island is best known for the hundreds of Moai (Easter Island statues) that can be found there.
At 163.6 square kilometers, the island is approximately the same size as the Dutch Wadden island of Texel (170 km²). 7,750 people live there (2017). It is one of the most isolated islands in the world: the nearest inhabited island, Pitcairn, is 2075 km away. The nearest uninhabited island, Salas y Gómez (Manu Motu Motiro Hiva), is 391 km away to the east.
