This exquisite pair of masks from the Hida region, crafted by Hiko Kogei, represents two iconic figures deeply rooted in Japanese religious and cultural traditions.

The first mask is of Maitreya, the Buddha of the future in Buddhist belief. Miroku is prophesied to appear in the world after the teachings of the current Buddha, Gautama Buddha, have been forgotten, to restore and guide humanity toward enlightenment.

The second mask is the Hannya, one of the most recognizable masks in Noh theater, symbolizing the vengeful spirit of a woman consumed by jealousy and hatred. The Hannya mask is a powerful depiction of dual emotions: the upper half of the face is marked by sadness and sorrow, while the lower half is twisted in rage, with the mouth wide open in a fearsome snarl. The mask also features two gilded horns on the forehead, adding to its fearsome appearance.

However, the Hannya mask is not merely a symbol of terror. It captures the tragic duality of the female spirit who, against her will, has been transformed into a demon. The mask conveys a deep sense of shame, regret, and the poignant sorrow of a soul torn apart by uncontrollable passion. It serves as a reminder to reflect on one's own emotions and desires.

The masks exhibit minor wear and dust due to age, with a visible adhesive mark on the left earlobe of the Maitreya mask. Please refer to the photos for a detailed view of their condition.
Additionally, there are some scuffs and minor scratches on the surfaces. The paper backing has some tears, and the masks will be removed from the thumbtacks for shipping.
