Sixteen Arhats 十六羅漢図 - 1864 - Hine Taizan 日根対山 (1813 - March 13, 1869) - Japán

*Hine Taizan (1813 - March 13, 1869) was a literati painter at the end of the Edo period. He loved painting from an early age, first studying under Eiun Momota of the Tosa school, and after moving to Osaka, he studied Nanga under Hane Okada. He was a childhood friend of Satoi Ukioka, a wealthy merchant from Izumisano, and under Ukioka's patronage, he honed his painting skills through imitations of Chinese paintings. When he was 28 years old, he went to Kyoto and studied economics and calligraphy under Kano Kano. After moving to Kyoto, he formed close friendships with members of the royal family, including Seigan Yanagawa, Kisaburo Rai, Tetsuseki Fujimoto, and Kouseki Nakanishi. He was strongly influenced by the Maruyama school and admired the southern painter Tetsuo Somon. He mainly specializes in landscape paintings. Perhaps reflecting his love of alcohol and his generous personality, many of his works are extremely stylish and full of an easy-going mood.
