Superb lacquered wooden clothing rack 衣桁 (ikô), used for official displaying kimono.
The body of the rectangular detachable frame decorated with a covering design of paulownia leaves and -flowers 桐 (kiri) connected by scrolling vines.
In Japan, the paulownia tree (kiri) symbolizes prosperity, resilience, and honour. It is often associated with the imperial family and featured in the crest of the Japanese government, representing strength and noble status.
Rendered in golden hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) and takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer design) on a glossy black lacquer substrate.
Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912).

Height 158.5 cm, Width 176 cm, Depth 43 cm.
Considering the age the ikô is in a very good condition. For a clear condition reference, please look at the photos.
An ikô is a piece of interior furnishing documented to be used in Japan as early as the twelfth century. By the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries, lacquer clothing stands had become a conventional item included in the bridal trousseau of wealthy women.
The kimono shown in the picture is included in this lot.
This stand is all original and will be shipped in individual parts and is easy to put together. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
