A captivating tall two-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a rarely depicted scene of a bustling kite-flying festival along the Nagasaki coast, offering a view of the famous Deshima 出島.
Servants fly an array of rectangular kites, some adorned with Kanji representing shogi pieces like dairyû 大龍 (Great Dragon) and ryûô 龍王 (Dragon King), over the edge of a vibrant green mountainside. People of various classes, including Dutch families, watch the performance while enjoying a variety of other games and activities on the festival grounds. The wide view over the bay showcases numerous large Dutch ships and smaller Japanese boats docked in Nagasaki.
Watercolour and ink on silk. The panels are mounted by two brocade silk borders, a thin white one, and a broad green one. Protected by a black lacquer wooden frame with its protective hardware.
Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912-1926).
Dimensions
Total width: 193 cm (2 x 96.5 cm); Height: 162.7 cm.
It is in a very good condition with minimal traces of wear consistent with age and some re-papering on the backside. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
Due to the fragility of this piece, a custom-made wooden crate will be made for transport. As a result, please be aware that this extends the handling time.
