Biography
Shibano Ritsuzan (1736-1807)
1736-1807
Confucianist of the mid to late Edo period.
Born in Sanuki (Kagawa Prefecture) in the first year of the Genbun era.
His first name was Kunihiko. Common name is Hikosuke. Also known as Ko-gu-ken.
Studied at Shohei School, and studied Japanese studies in Kyoto.
At the age of 53, he was invited by Matsudaira Sadanobu, an old court scholar, to become a Confucian official in the Shogunate and an instructor at Shohei School.
He promoted Zhu Xi's philosophy and implemented the Kansei Prohibition of Heterodox Studies. He was called the "Three Doctors of Kansei," together with Bito Nisu and Koga Seiri.
He died in Bunka 4 at the age of 72.
