A superb, large six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with a detailed painting set against a backdrop of gleaming gold leaf. The rarely depicted scene captures a serene nature moment: a vast field adorned with both dried and fresh rice plants 稲 (ine), heavy with grains. A group of lively sparrows 雀 (suzume) flutters around, eagerly searching for delicious grains amidst the abundance.
Colour and ink on gold leaf. The panels are surrounded by two brocade silk borders, a thin dark gold one, and a wide blue one with floral design.
Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century).
Dimensions:
Total width: 377 cm. (2 x 64.3 cm and 4 x 62.1 cm); Height: 172.4 cm.
Considering its age, which is approx. 150-220 years old, it is in a very good restored condition with wear conform age. Please have a close look at imperfections of the 5th panel. For a general clear condition reference, please have a look at the photos as well.
The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art.
