Rare ceramic tile from the renaissance in Normandy, dating from the reign of François 1er Orange-red ceramic brick or tile decorated with a woman bust seen in profile. The potters of Mélamare were popular in the days of the French Renaissance. They produced bricks in orange-red pottery decorated with motifs characteristic of this era: crests, mermaids, interlacing plants, angels, pelicans, men wearing helmets... About 20 different decors have been identified. They are said to be made by moulding carved wooden panels from chests (typical furniture of that time). Few of these bricks have survived! This brick features a woman's bust in a medallion, her hair held by a scarf tied to the side. It probably comes from the Mare-Barbey house in Melamare, built in 1520-1530, which walls were covered with it. Some of these bricks were scattered in 1871. The lower part contains an old label bearing the number 918.
