Maren has been recognized for his skills in drawing and painting since he was young and honed his abilities at the prestigious Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. He was encouraged by his brother, the renowned illustrator Sanjulian, to pursue a career in illustration, which he began in 1979, and has since worked for several international publishers such as Dell Publishing, Bantam, Dove, Fontana, and Mondadori.

Maren’s illustration work won him the award for best illustration of fantasy and science fiction in the early 1990s. In addition to his illustration work, Maren is well-known for his portrait paintings, including a commission to paint the main cast of the Star Wars re-release in 1996. His award-winning work in fantasy and sci-fi illustration has established him as one of the most respected artists in the genre.
