To understand better the semantic of the term Byeri, an etymological and local approach seems to be useful. It seems to take it origin from two Fang verbs, “Biet”, meaning to draw and “Beer” which means to put down.
Thus, the meaning of the Byeri resides in the place where vital energy is drawn and where offerings are placed, both for a propitiatory and for a sacrificial purpose. For many peoples of Africa or Oceania, the skull is sacred, it is the place where the vital force of a person is housed. For them, this force can still be transmitted from the dead to the living.
The Byeri reliquary figurine is represented by a head or a figurine, and is related to the ancestors, founders of the lineage. It is usually placed on a cylindrical box made of bark or on a basket in wicker work.
