Edvard Munch, painter of anguish, fear, illness, death... And precisely for this reason he was a precursor of German Expressionism, which was so fond of these sordid themes.

In a certain sense, for Munch this represented beauty, since “in the same way that Leonardo da Vinci had studied human anatomy and dissected bodies, I try to dissect souls”.

In a way, he perfectly portrayed modern man and his existential suffering, as linked to sex as to death and which was translated into the themes he dealt with in his painting: loneliness and anguish.

Edvard Munch was born in Løten, Norway. In his childhood he suffered the loss of close relatives due to tuberculosis and lived in fear of a very strict and religious father. He began a career in engineering, but abandoned it to start an artistic career that drank from the symbolism of Gauguin.

His style, very personal and expressive, not at all naturalistic, attracted attention. At the same time he lived an existence marked by loneliness, depression and alcoholism, which paradoxically contributed to his creativity. Even so, he was admitted to a sanatorium and died completely alone, although he was recognized artistically as the best Norwegian painter.

He left more than 1000 paintings, 15 400 engravings and more than 4500 drawings and watercolors. The theft of his masterpiece “The Scream” in 1994, which was recovered eight weeks later, was a resounding success. Ten years later it would be stolen again and recovered again two years later.

The Scream is one of the most famous, most recognizable of all pictures ever painted. It has become a true “cultural icon”.

As if that were not enough, it has the importance of being a precursor of expressionism (one of the most emblematic movements of the 20th century).

The Scream is probably the most perfect example of what an expressionist work is: the artist does not portray the world outside him, but through what he paints he shows his emotions, his inner world, and to “paint” those moods he uses as fundamental tools the distortion of the figure and the strident coloring.

Everyone knows El grito. However, what not everyone knows is that there is not just one scream, but several.

Over the years, Munch produced four versions of his work plus a lithograph (a work engraved to make prints).

The versions are in oil and pastel on cardboard or in tempera on cardboard, and the most famous is from 1893 and is in the National Gallery in Oslo.

Measurements: 70 x 50 cm.

All posters are original and have been selected by art lovers for art lovers.
