【Product details】
This exquisite incense burner, crafted from copper by the renowned metalwork artist Sano Kosai, exemplifies the finest Takaoka metal artistry. Born in 1944 in Takaoka, Sano Kosai is celebrated as one of Japan's most distinguished metal artisans. He achieved numerous accolades throughout his career, including his first selection for the 15th Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 1968 and thirteen subsequent recognitions. In 1983, he had the honor of demonstrating his craftsmanship before the Emperor and Empress (then Crown Prince and Princess), further solidifying his legacy. He is also a regular member of the Japan Kōgeikai (Japan Traditional Crafts Association).
This "Mangiku" (literally "Ten Thousand Chrysanthemums") incense burner features intricate openwork of overlapping chrysanthemum flowers, symbolizing longevity, rejuvenation, and imperial status in Japanese culture. The chrysanthemum, a motif often associated with nobility, is revered for its enduring beauty and connection to the Emperor of Japan, who adopted it as the Imperial Seal. The lid’s detailed chrysanthemum carvings allow fragrant smoke to escape, adding a touch of elegance to the incense ceremony.
The piece rests on three legs, each designed as chrysanthemum stems, and bears the artist’s signature (Kosai) on the base. The accompanying original wooden box also features the artist’s inscription and seal.
