This listing features a single volume (Volume 1 of 2) of the woodblock printed book Hanai Oume Suigetsu Kimon (花井於梅粋月奇聞translated as The Curious Tale of Oume from Suigetsuro), published in Meiji 20 (1887). This Meiji-era novel, compiled by Akibatei Sōfū and illustrated by Utagawa Kunimatsu, features a color-printed frontispiece and detailed illustrations throughout.
The story centers on Oume, a daughter of a samurai from the former Sakura Domain (Shimousa Province), whose family fell into ruin. She was adopted by a confectioner in Azabu, Tokyo, named Okada Tsunekichi. The novel belongs to the "poison woman" genre (dokufu mono), a type of sensational literature popular in the Meiji period. It depicts a real-life incident involving a murder at Suigetsurō, a restaurant in Nihonbashi Hamacho, where the proprietress, Oume, stabbed her clerk, Minekichi, to death. Published shortly after the incident in 1887, the book is a valuable artifact of early modern Japanese literary and cultural history.
The author, Akibatei Sōfū, was an active writer during the Meiji period, known for his work in compiling novels and wahon. This book is considered one of his significant contributions to Meiji literature. The illustrator, Utagawa Kunimatsu (1855–1944), was a member of the Utagawa school of ukiyo-e. He was a student of Utagawa Toyokuni V and worked across the late Edo, Meiji, and early Showa periods, producing notable works in traditional Japanese art.
The book exhibits signs of age, including scuffs, stains, folds, wrinkles, small tears, holes, and paper deterioration. Please refer to the photos for a detailed view of its condition. A rare and intriguing example of Meiji-era popular literature, this book is an important resource for collectors and historians of Japanese art and culture.
