These were sold by the mail-order company Senshukai in the 1960s and 1970s as a distribution system, where a different type of animal would be sent each month.
It is said that kokeshi doll artisans handmade each one.
They are made using cherry wood, and each animal is made with great attention to detail, with leather being used in parts for the elephant's ears.
This is a very rare vintage item that is no longer manufactured or sold.
