【Product details】

This striking ceramic oni (demon) mask was crafted by Kojima Naoki, a celebrated potter born in 1962 in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture. Known for his mastery of traditional techniques, Kojima began working with ceramics at the age of 12 alongside his father. He currently creates works at Sougen Kiln, where he specializes in reviving the textures, glazes, and aesthetics of old Karatsu pottery through labor-intensive practices, including wood-fired kilns.

The mask features a bold, expressive face with exaggerated features and a crackled glaze that adds a sense of depth and character. Each detail, from the sharp fangs to the piercing eyes, exemplifies Kojima’s dedication to craftsmanship and artistry. The accompanying wooden box bears the artist’s signature and seal, further attesting to its authenticity.

Kojima is renowned for his dedication to replicating ancient pottery techniques, drawing inspiration from fragments of old ceramics. His work at Sougen Kiln emphasizes the use of local clays and traditional glazes sourced from the surrounding mountains. Kojima aims to create pottery that embodies both historical reverence and practical beauty, producing pieces intended to be cherished and used for generations.

Karatsu ware is a type of Japanese pottery originating from Karatsu, Saga Prefecture. Known for its understated elegance, it often features earthy textures and simple forms, reflecting the natural materials used.

The artist's signature is inscribed on the reverse of the mask. The wooden box also features Kojima’s handwritten signature and seal. The mask is in excellent condition with no noticeable stains or damage. Please refer to the photos for further details.
