A magnificent lacquered suzuri’bako 硯箱 (writing box) depicting Jurojin 寿老人, one of the Seven Lucky Gods, accompanied by his iconic stag.
The rectangular box with rounded corners features a slightly domed cover. The exterior is rendered in a glossy black roiro lacquer 蝋色漆 ground with nashiji 梨子地 along the base. The top is beautifully adorned with polychrome takamaki-e 高蒔絵 and inlays of mother of pearl (raden 螺鈿) and reverse painted glass, depicting Jurojin with his stag. The interior of the cover is decorated in gold takamaki-e and togidashi makie 研出蒔絵 (burnished lacquer design) showcasing cranes 鶴 (tsuru) flying over a large pine tree 松 (matsu), and enhanced by a single malachite inlay. Inside the box an raised interior housing a pure silver crane-shaped suiteki 水滴 (water dropper), marked ‘Pure silver’銀純, an inkstone suzuri 硯, and two inscribed ink cakes.
The underside bears the seal mark of the famous Zôhiko 象彦 company, with the character zo 象 (elephant) in the seal.
Period: Japan – Late 19th century to early 20th century (Meiji period/Taishô period).
Dimensions: Height 5.7 cm, Width 24.2 cm, Depth 22.1 cm.
In a very good condition, showing only minor wear. Like some craquelé along the upper raised edge of box. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
Complete with a signed and sealed wooden tomobako 供箱 (storage box) with inscription in ink. Signed ‘Heian, Zohiko’ 平安象彦.
