Anyone stung by a scorpion can experience breathing difficulties and Selkis' task was thus to prevent stings. In addition, Selkis was also responsible for protecting the sarcophagus and the canopic chest, together with the goddesses Isis, Nephthys and Neith. The particular canopic jar entrusted to her was the one associated with the god Qebehsenuf.
