This hammered copper vase, crafted by the renowned Gyokusendo workshop, exemplifies the exquisite craftsmanship that has been passed down through six generations. Gyokusendo, a workshop with over 200 years of history, has been producing hammered copperware since the Edo period. In 1980, their techniques were designated as an intangible cultural heritage.

Gyokusendo's copperware is known for its distinctive coloration, particularly the "Shikin color," which presents a deep hue that can appear green, blue, or jet black, a hallmark of their craftsmanship. This vase features the "Kuchi Uchidashi" technique, where a single sheet of copper is skillfully hammered to form a seamless mouth. The "Tsuchime" pattern refers to the regular marks left by the hammering process, creating a rhythmic texture across the vase's surface. The "Uchidashi" surface finish is another unique aspect, giving the vase its beautifully uneven texture, a result of the meticulous hammering process.

The base of the vase bears the maker's mark of Gyokusendo. Over time, the vase has developed some wear, with areas showing signs of use, including areas where rust has been polished away, revealing a silvery hue beneath. Please refer to the photos to assess its condition.
