【Product details】

This remarkable Meiji period document box, or bunko, is a splendid example of Japanese craftsmanship, featuring the elegance of chrysanthemum motifs in gold makie and the delicate beauty of raden (mother-of-pearl) inlay. The lid of the box is adorned with two chrysanthemum crests, each meticulously rendered with precision and artistry in gold lacquer. Chrysanthemums, a flower of great cultural significance in Japan, symbolize longevity, rejuvenation, and the beauty of autumn.

The background of the front lid is crafted with a diagonal lattice pattern in gold, which adds an intriguing geometric element to the composition. The use of makie, where fine gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer, produces intricate and enduring designs that shine with a refined luster.

Inside, the box's interior lid is decorated with a raised image of a hankadai (flower stand) crafted with exquisite raden inlay work. Hankadai is a decorative stand often used for displaying vases or bonsai. This particular hankadai is delicately inlaid with tiny pieces of shimmering mother-of-pearl, adding a touch of luxury and elegance. The iridescent raden inlay brings a captivating play of light and color, symbolizing purity, harmony, and the natural beauty found in Japanese art.

This box shows signs of age and use, including wear, small scratches, scuffs, cracks, dents, discoloration, and some chipping, particularly around the corners. The storage box has tape and glue repairs. Please refer to the photographs for a clear view of the condition.
