ISLAMIQUE, Califat omeyyade. Hisham II. AR Dirham Wasit mint, AH 121 = AD 738. (Sans Prix de Réserve)
ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate, time of Hisham II AR Dirham. Wasit mint, AH 121 = AD 738.
On the obverse of the coin, the central inscription features the Kalima, the Islamic declaration of faith, arranged in three lines. It reads: "لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ / وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ / مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ," which translates to "There is no deity but Allah, alone, without partner. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah." Surrounding this central text, the name of the mint "Wasit" and the date "AH 121" are inscribed, all within triple borders that are separated by five small circles, known as annulets.
The reverse of the coin contains the part of Surah Al-Ikhlas (Quran 112) in four lines, stating: " اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ / اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ / لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ / وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ," which means " He is Allah, the One; Allah, the Eternal Refuge; He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent." Encircling this central inscription, the outer text features a verse from the Quran (9:33), which reads: "هُوَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُ بِالْهُدَىٰ وَدِينِ الْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ," translating to "It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although those who associate others with Allah dislike it."
