Grenier Glaçure noire Skyphos (Sans Prix de Réserve)

Attic Black Glaze Skyphos Ca. 350 BC A black glazed skyphos presenting a tall body that slightly tapers to a base, creating a sleek and elegant form that is both functional and visually appealing. The vessel is fitted with two horizontal handles on opposing sides, enabling the user to easily grasp and lift the cup. The handles are rendered in a curvilinear shape that adds a graceful and fluid touch to the design. The entire surface of the skyphos is covered in a rich, lustrous black glaze, a technique that was popular among ancient Greek potters for its aesthetic appeal and practical advantages. The glaze not only enhances the visual appeal of the piece but also makes it more durable and resistant to wear and tear. The skyphos was a popular drinking vessel in ancient Greece, used for serving wine and other beverages during social and religious gatherings. The tall body and two handles allowed for easy and comfortable handling, while the black glaze added a touch of elegance and sophistication to the drinking experience. Cf. The Brooklyn Museum, Accession Number 05.3. Size: L:75mm / W:140mm ; 110g Provenance: Private London collection, B.A.; formerly in pre-2000 European collection.
