This is one of a series of works made between 2000 and 2024 in which I attempt to migrate experiences of landscape into an experience of painting, for both artist and viewer. I draw my experiences specifically from the landscape and mountains of the Pyrenees and the moors and coastal scapes of West Penwith, Cornwall. As I work, I start with a memory or the memory of an experience. As I paint, ash, bitumen and memory accumulate on the canvas, the process and experience of making the painting becomes paramount. The painting thus becomes a new experience, usurping the relic of memory and imagination. Since 2016 I have lived in Ariege, France. My current work is concerned with a phenomenological approach to representing mountain landscapes. Previously in my post doctoral period (PhD completed in 2014) I lived in Cornwall, UK. During which time my research and practice aimed to claim the bouldering experience for art by considering how the physical demands of bouldering (a form of rock climbing) could inform concepts of visual representation and performance in art. Please also remember that these paintings have evidences of the time based processes employed in their creation; ie paint on the sides of the stretched canvas, cracks in the thicker areas of paint, drips etc. These are all part of the art work and valued as part of the creative process.
