Joel Chandler Harris / Harry Rountree & Rene Bull (ill) - Uncle Remus, or the story of Mr. Fox and Brer Rabbit (deluxe first edition) - 1906

"Uncle Remus, or the story of Mr. Fox and Brer Rabbit" by Joel Chandler Harris, with 12 coloured plates by Harry Rowntree and 84 pen and ink pictures by Rene Bull - Thomas Nelson, London -1906, First Rountree edition. Deluxe issue in full cloth binding - 25cmx18cm - condition: good, in original blue decorated publisher's binding, with some wear and rubbing to edges, name to ffep, all plates and illustrations present, one plate loose but present. As always Rountree's illustrations are wonderful, with bright colours and bold images. The book misspells the artist's name as Rowntree. Uncle Remus is the fictional title character and narrator of a collection of African American folktales compiled and adapted by Joel Chandler Harris and published in book form in 1881. Harris was a journalist in post–Reconstruction era Atlanta, and he produced seven Uncle Remus books. He did so by introducing tales that he had heard and framing them in the plantation context. He wrote his stories in a dialect which was his interpretation of the Deep South African-American language of the time. For these framing and stylistic choices, Harris's collection has garnered controversy since its publication.[1] Many of these stories are believed to have Creek Indian influence too.
