Shiraibyoshi is a type of song and dance that originated in the late Heian and Kamakura periods, and the performers who performed it. It is said that the origin of Shirabyoshi dates back to the Miko (shrine maiden) dances performed by shrine maidens. In Shinto rituals, it has long been believed that when male and female priestesses possessed a deity by dancing, in some cases they were able to "transform" themselves temporarily into the opposite sex.
