Kabuki actors from the 'Gonin otoko' 五人男 (Five Chivalrous Men) cycle
Toyohara was a Japanese woodblock print artist , Talented as a child , at about thirteen he became a student of Tokyo's then-leading print maker Utagawa Kinisada, His deep appreciation and knowledge of Kabuki drama led to his production primarily of yakusha-e, which are woodblock prints of Kabuki actors and scenes from popular plays of the time. This is the case of the 5 portraits, from Kabuki actors in the role of Samourais.
The work is interessant ; first a scene of 5 woodblocks is unusual, generally Toyohara proposed tryptiques so a plate of 3 scenes. Secondly, the work is very refined , few features like Contempory Art ( Picasso and others )
Endly, and it's better to have them in visual, the following of these 5 portraits , with few differences , but with different colors , seems a plate of Warhol with the same portraits with differents colors.
These are woodcut ( Ukiyo-e ) with the technic Nishiki-e
This work with a fine choice of frame will be wonderful in a contempory atmosphere.
Each plate is 35,5 x 23,5 cm ( total scene 175 cm ) Excellent conditions for the age.
