Whole collection 10X lot fertility statuettes from Mbuti pygmies, Ituri forest, D. R. of Congo. Estimated age: 1940. The statuettes are six male and four female. Dimensions: male #1: width: 10.3 cm; height: 14.2 cm; depth: 7.4 cm; male #2: width: 9.6 cm; height: 15.9 cm; depth: 5.7 cm; male #3: width: 9.8 cm; height: 17.9 cm; depth: 7.3 cm; male #4: width: 10.5 cm; height: 16 cm; depth: 6.6 cm; male #5: width: 12.2 cm; height: 16.2 cm; depth: 5.8 cm; male #6: width: 9.5 cm; height: 14.6 cm; depth: 6.7 cm; female #1: width: 11.5 cm; height: 15.4 cm; depth: 6.7 cm; female #2: width: 12.1 cm; height: 17.2 cm; depth: 6.6 cm; female #3: width: 12.9 cm; height: 14 cm; depth: 7.2 cm; female #4: width: 11.7 cm; height: 15 cm; depth: 6.2 cm. Provenance: collected on early fifties by comboni fathers in Ituri. Materials: wood, riverbed clay, forest clay, iron nails, natural pigments (indigofera tinctoria, annatto, dried river algae). The statuettes have been covered in the course of time by libations and offerings, as well as sacrificial materials, showing a deep encrusted patina. Overall condition: the statuettes show deep use, but overall they're in good condition and well preserved. These are unique items, very hard to find. Mbuti pygmies don't commerce these statuettes. Only few examples have been catalogued in western museums. Possibly they're not in use anymore among the Bambuti.
