A terracotta jar from the Indus Valley civilisation decorated with a geometric design in black pigment. The vessel is globular in shape with a rounded base and a short neck that widens to a slightly flared mouth. The main register on the body of the pot is decorated with alternating triangular panels of cross-hatched patterns, framed by vertical bands to the top and bottom. The neck is encircled with two thick bands. The piece retains much of its vibrant red pigment, though parts have faded from age. Earthly encrustations to the surface. The Indus Valley Civilisation was situated on the Indus River and was one of three early and widespread cradles of civilisation along with Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. At its peak, the Indus Valley Civilisation, which included such sites as Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, may have had a population of over five million, who developed new techniques in pottery, seal carving, and metallurgy.
