Indisputably the finest night bomber of the Second World War, The Avro Lancaster entered service with Bomber Command in late 1941. Powered by four Rolls Royce Merlin XX engines and armed with ten. 303 Browning machine guns, the Lancaster Mk1 carried a then phenomenal 14,000lb of bombs. A total of 7,378 were built and nine of the thirty-two VCs awarded to airmen during the war went to Lancaster crew. "
