The USS Pickerel (SS-524) emerges from the water after carrying out a ballast blowing test off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii, on 1st March 1952.
USS Pickerel (SS 524) surfacing at a depth of 150 feet with an upward angle of 48 degrees during a routine training exercise off Oahu, Territory of Hawaii, Pickerel, commissioned April 4, 1949 at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, set what is believed to be the world record for snorkeling operations from Hong Kong to Honolulu, a distance of 5,200 miles in 21 days. The commanding officer at the time was Lieutenant Commander H.B. Sweitzer, USN. The Navy photographers who took this picture were on board the USS Sabalo (SS 302).
