Hartmann Schedel / Michael Wolgemut/ Wilhelm Pleydenwurff - The Nuremberg Chronicle (Liber Chronicarum) - 1493
Original incunabulum woodcut leaf L (50) from the Nuremberg Chronicle of Hartmann Schedel, the first Latin edition from 1493.
An incunabulum (cradle print) is a book printed in Europe before 1 January 1501, when the printing press was still in its infancy, and of which the text is set in movable type. They are now rarely seen on the market.
The Nuremberg Chronicle (Liber Chronicarum) by Hartmann Schedel is one of the most famous and best illustrated incunabula. The beautiful woodcuts were made by Michael Wohlgemut (1434/37-1519) and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff (1450-1494), a teacher of Albrecht Dürer. Dürer probably also contributed to the execution of many of the woodcuts for this incunabulum.
The beautifully coloured woodcuts of Folio L illustrate:
1. The City of Jericho: The illustration shows Jericho as a lonely, empty place. It used to be a royal city but is now a small village with about eight houses. You can see the city walls and gate, with ruins in the background, maybe from an old castle or fort. The land around it is mostly bare, with only a few trees and bushes, making the city look deserted.
2. The Ascension of Elijah: It shows Elijah going up to heaven. He is leaving the earth in a fiery chariot that looks like a small, four-wheeled wagon. The chariot is small compared to Elijah. The horses pulling it are partly hidden by a cloud of fire. Elijah is looking back at Elisha, who is holding Elijah's mantle, showing that Elisha will take over Elijah's role. This scene highlights the miracle of Elijah's ascent and his close bond with Elisha.
The verso side depicts different beautiful illustrations:
1. The Priestly Lineage including: Azarias, Yoyada and Azariah.
2. The Lineage of the Syrian Kings including: Benedab, Asael, Benedab II, Raasim
3. Zacharias, the son of the high priest Jehoiada
4. Naboth, owner of the vineyard coveted by Ahab
