An exceptional silver signet ring with delicate engraving spelling out 'CAESAR'. The bezel form is a wide flattened oval which flows into a uniform band. The silver has a patina and the ring overall is in very good condition.
The ancient Romans wore signet rings as a forms of signature and status. Each ring is unique as it relates to the identity of its original owner. The emblem shown on the ring would act as a stamp and also an representative symbol for the person or their family. This trend of using signet rings as status symbols pre-dates the Roman Empire, with Egyptian seal necklaces being a common accessory, and it is something which carried on even after the Romans. Kings throughout the medieval period used these pieces of jewellery to act as their official seal.
