The very rare and sought after First edition and First printing Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein.
First edition and First printing in rare first state jacket. A military Science Fiction novel, it was written first as a 2 part serial in The magazine of fantasy & science fiction as Starship Soldier. In December of 1959, this edition was published by G.P. Putnam’s Sons and was the winner of the 1960 Hugo Award for Best Novel.
It was originally written as a juvenile novel, but was rejected by Scribner’s because of the violence within the story. It is considered to be one of the best known and most influential works of science fiction of all time and a landmark in military science fiction. It is one of Heinlein’s best selling books of all time and remains both relevant and quite relatable. The novel is not without criticism surrounding the political aspects of the narrative which I will decline to comment on, save that they are there and multi-faceted. The novel would be turned into the successful 1997 film adaptation which resembles the novel but little, and was nevertheless entertaining.
The first printing has been extremely scarce particularly in the quite fragile first state jacket. The true first state jacket has the $3.95 price and no mention of the Hugo Award on the rear panel, the ST just above the price and the YA at the bottom of the jacket flap. Examples of first printings with clipped jackets are typically later state jackets cloaking a first edition book. The book is additionally a first issue with “anywhen” on the dedication page.
The dust jacket is very good but faded.
The book is good with quite sharp edges and a nice looking page block. Some stains on the book cover and a few lines have been underlined with pen.
Comes with a custom made market clam shell case.
