Also known as "Petermann's Geographische Mitteilingen" The "Mittheilungen aus Justus Perthes' Geographischen Anstalt über wichtige neue Forschungen auf dem Gesamtgebiete der Geographie" was THE platform for publications, principally maps, of REMOTE and little explored REGIONS.
Gotha, Justus Perthes, 1857. 4to. 550 text pages,and 25 (mostly with one or more extra colours) maps, all bound in the rear. Contemporary brown, blindstamped cloth with gilt title on the spine and front board.
The maps includes a VERY LARGE, COLOURED one of the Pacific Ocean, with ocean temperatures as in the mid-19th-century. Further maps are of INDIA, POLYNESIA, AUSTRALIA, West-Central AFRICA(partly coloured), the Zambezi, central South America (large, folded and partly coloured), the Netherlands (16 coloured maps on agriculture, geology, religion, industry, etc.), the Amur river between Siberia and CHINA, a very large, folded, coloured map of INDIA, a map show earth quakes (epicentres), maps and views of the Orizaba volcano in MEXICO, Uruguay, Bessinia, a profile of the bottom of the North Atlantic (following a telegraph-cable between Newfoundland and Ireland, etc., etc.
Neatly rebacked. Title page creased; slightly spotted throughout.
A very good, complete copy.
