Original from the 80s

AR Penck (1939 in Dresden - 2017 in Zurich), actually Ralf Winkler (pseudonyms were Tancred Mitschel, Mike Hammer, TM, Mickey Spilane, Theodor Marx, aY or Y) was one German painter, graphic artist and sculptor and jazz musician.

Penck is also considered the father of the “Neue Wilden”, a movement of the early 1980s with an ironic and provocative aesthetic. Penck already depicted a naked man lying on a kind of springbok in one of his first paintings from 1955 entitled "Torture". Several men around him torment him.

When photography and video whirled up art in the mid-1980s, Penck made wooden sculptures. The reputable artist nomad was never just fixated on painting anyway. He wrote theoretical texts, poems with lots of wit and essays. His secret love was music. Penck played piano and guitar and was a jazz musician.

As a drummer and pianist, his music tended towards freedom, with long experimental improvisations that hardly seem to stick together from moment to moment and are best revealed on the macro level. Much of Penck's playing has a raw beauty, a kind of raw and unfiltered play that does not always push forward. Penck recorded with Frank Wollny mainly as TTT (Triple Trip Touch). With TTT, Penck and Wollny recorded albums with Frank Wright, Lawrence "Butch" Morris, Jeanne Lee, Alan Silva, Billy Bang, Frank Lowe, Louis Moholo-Moholo and Peter Kowald, among others.
