Schwarzelbling is a grape variety that is only grown 2-3 times in Germany/Europe, mostly by non-commercial hoppy winemakers. Unfortunately, due to its rarity, Schwarzelbling has not yet made it onto the official grape variety lists in Europe, which is why it had to be declared as experimental cultivation at the 1864 Scharfbillig winery. While the 1864 Scharfbillig winery initially found it merely amusing, a red wine variety called Elbling was also grown ecologically and traditionally in a mineral-rich slate slope location in the oldest city in Germany (Trier). With a lot of work and 160 years of know-how, it quickly became a wine that found many fans due to its uniqueness and rarity. The wine impresses with its individual, slightly woody aroma, which is further emphasized by the twelve-month storage in oak barriques. It does not have to lose its characteristic fruity bouquet of cherries and blackberries as a result. The wine is still very young, rich in tannins and with a fine pull on the palate, which becomes softer and gentler over the years.
