Provenance: Ex SOTHEBY'S USA 1991 sale. NOTE CATAWIKI HAS SEEN EVIDENCE OF PURCHASE AND PROVENANCE. I will send evidence of Sotheby's provenance.

This lot comes from the private collection of Mr. J. Bahamonde who over a period of 20 years acquired his collection from various prestigious dealers and has now decided to downsize his beloved collection. His degree in ancient Near East and Roman Britain archaeology from Manchester University, one of the best in the U.K. and passion for ancient history is reflected in this intriguing and superb figure.

A rare and extraordinary stucco Buddha figure, seated cross-legged on a rectangular plinths, high hair top bun, arched eyebrows above gently lidded down cast eyes, aquiline nose over plump lips, the robe draped in an arch-shaped cowl around the neck and covering the shoulders, further stretched over the folded knees and gathered elegantly between the legs, both hands in dhyana mudra at the lap. The figure attached to its custom-made stand.

This is a truly rare and very intriguing piece of ancient art which the photographs do not show how beautiful it is. If you purchase this lot you will be extremely pleased.

Size (the figure only): 43 x 28 cm

Overall with Stand: 47 x 32 x 11 cm (height x width x depth).

Condition: Good ancient condition when considering age and material; ancient wear and losses as seen, with soil accretion over the original red and white pigments. Head probably reattached.
