Daido Moriyama - Yokosuka: A Japanese Town, from Provoke 2

A very special signed limited edition gelatin silver print from the legendary photographer Daido Moriyama (b.1938) titled Yokosuka: A Japanese Town, an image from 1969 and featured in Provoke 2 - one of the most important photographic periodicals ever published in Japan. This print is in excellent condition and measures 253 x 201mm (10 x 8in) while the image measures 234mm x 156mm. It is signed by Daido Moriyama verso and numbered from an edition of 150. Moriyama began his career as an assistant to photographer Eikoh Hosoe, a co-founder of the avant-garde photo cooperative Vivo, and made his mark with his first photobook Japan: A Photo Theater, published in 1968. His formative work in the 1960s boldly captured the darker qualities of urban life in postwar Japan in rough, unfettered fashion, filtering the rawness of human experience through sharply tilted angles, grained textures, harsh contrast, and blurred movements through the photographer's wandering gaze. Moriyama now has a bibliography of over three hundred monographs to his name, including Farewell Photography (1972), Hunter (1972), and Light and Shadow (1982). He received the Japan Photo Critics Association Newcomer’s Award for the photobook Japan, A Photo Theater in 1967. Solo exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Fondation Cartier pour l’arte contemporain solidified Moriyama’s reputation and he became the first Japanese artist to receive the Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2012. He won the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography in 2019. Recent exhibitions include the Photographer's Gallery, London, Reflex Amsterdam and recent awards include L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, Chevalier and The Hasselblad Foundation, International Award in Photography. The artist’s works are also held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Fotomuseum Wintherthur in Switzerland, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, among others. Please note this item will be carefully packed and ship from the United Kingdom and the buyer is responsible for any applicable import taxes.
