Large Japanese hand carved wooden statue of Daikokuten大黒天, finely carved with vivid expressions and excellent workmanship.
He was introduced to Japan along with Esoteric Buddhism, and was one of the guardian deities of Buddhism known as the Tenbu, and was considered a god of war, combat, and wealth, but it was in China that Mahakala's three characteristics were worshipped, and this was brought to Japan with an emphasis on wealth. As he was introduced through Esoteric Buddhism, he was worshipped primarily in Shingon and Tendai sects in the early days. During the Muromachi period, he was also widely worshipped in the Nichiren sect. He is affectionately known as "Daikoku-san."
